Mt. Carmel Invitational Recap

Racing as a full team for the first time this season, the Dolphins descended upon Morley Field at Balboa Park in San Diego for the Mt. Carmel Invitational in impressive fashion, claiming individual race wins in three events and team wins in four.

In the Division 2 Boys Sweepstakes race, senior Jai Dawson ran a measured effort over the first two miles of the course before unleashing a decicive move over the final third of the race to win by over 20 seconds in a time of 15:39.1, the fourth fastest time in school history on the course. See his post race interview with MileSplit here. The senior boys as a whole finished 5th in the race.

The Girls Division 2 Sweepstakes saw the Dolphin senior trio of Ave Vander Zanden, Ali Germain, and Paloma Enriquez all race well, but without the minimum of 5 runners did not register a team result.

The first team victory of the day came in the Girls Junior Division 2 race. Allura Markow led from the gun, ultimately winning in a time of 15:57, outpacing the second place finisher by over a minute. Behind her, Angie Lopez, Ella Cochran, Dani Freedberg, and Olivia Nemeth all finished within the top 20 to secure a convincing team victory.

Not to be outdone, in the Boys Junior Division 2 race, the Dolphins placed their scoring 5 of Jack Jones, Derrick Grassman, Josh Chernekoff, Robert Alvillar, and Sam Hunter within the top 30 finishers to put Dana on top of the team standings.

The Girls Sophomore Division 2 race saw the most convincing team victory of the day. Up front, Paige Scheer and Tessa Anderson battled side by side for much of the 2.7 mile course layout before Scheer ultimately prevailed winning the race in a time of 17:16 to Anderson’s 17:21. Their 1-2 overall finish was cemented with the remaining scoring crew of Quinci Lott, Mia Alcantara, and Avery Higgins all finishing in the top 10 for the Dolphins to secure a 17 point team score triumph (low scores are good).

While the Sophomore Boys could not quite match the Sophomore girl’s team score, they had an overwhelming margin of victory, outpacing the second place team by a score of 38-114. The Dolphin scoring five was comprised of Mike Ayala, Ethan Britton, Joel Brda, Logan Harris, and Krossley Kirkpatrick.

The Girls Freshmen, like the seniors, lacked the minimum number of scorers to register a team result, but nonethless saw strong performances out of Tess Halbert, Mia Brian, Stephanie Parker, and Emily Beck.

The Freshmen boys finished off the day with a nail-biting second place finish, holding off third place Cathedral Catholic in a score of 79-80. Running as a team of just 5, Nathan Moersch, Mack Tucker, Gabriel Trejo, Justin Daly, Brock Zimmerman all packed well to bring home the second place finish.

Well done all runners! Full meet results can be found here.
